PostNord takes climate efforts forward – now with updated validated science-based targets

PostNord's climate transition continues to move forward. Now, the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has validated both the updated 2030 target and the new net-zero target to 2040. This means that PostNord's climate goals are in line with what the latest climate science requires to help limit global warming.

"Customers are placing increasingly higher demands on climate work. Our climate leadership is important both from a business perspective and to contribute to the Paris Agreement's 1.5-degree goal," says Amanda Jackson, Head of Group Sustainability at PostNord.

Clearer 2030 target

The updated science-based target means that PostNord will reduce absolute greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in scope 1, 2 and 3 by 45 percent by 2030, compared with 2020. Previously, there were two targets – one absolute and one relative. An absolute climate target makes responsibility clearer – it is the actual emission reductions that count.

The science-based target for 2030 is made more concrete with two operational targets: 100 per cent fossil-free road transportation and operations, and 80 per cent emission-free last-mile transportation with light vehicles.

Net-zero emissions by 2040

The net zero target means that PostNord's total GHG emissions must be reduced by at least 90 percent by 2040, compared with 2020. A maximum of 10 per cent may be neutralized through measures leading to permanent carbon sequestration in accordance with SBTi's requirements.

Achieving the goal requires continued electrification of transportation and collaboration with likeminded suppliers who can deliver low-emission products and services. So far, PostNord has reduced its total GHG emissions by 47 percent since 2020.
