PostNord's green tech roadmap paves the way to a fossil-free future

PostNord’s path to a fossil-free future is mapped out in its Green Technology Roadmap. Updated every year, the plan sets the course for reaching fossil-free operations by 2030 and, ultimately, net zero by 2040. It reflects new technology, shifting policies, and changing market conditions across the Nordic region.

The roadmap is a dynamic tool that adapts to changing realities. Each year, PostNord analyses the total cost of ownership for fuels and vehicle types, considering national policies and customer demands. The result is market-specific investment guidelines that ensure resources are directed where they have the greatest impact.

“Developing the roadmap can be challenging in a constantly changing landscape, but it’s also exciting to dive deep into the details and identify the smartest paths forward,” says Nima Ghaviha.

Different paths across the Nordics

The roadmap recognizes that conditions differ across markets. Sweden has advanced fastest, driven by strong customer demand and access to biofuels. Denmark has the strongest policies supporting electrification of the trucks, although PostNord sees positive total cost ownership for electric driveline in most of use cases across all markets.

Norway, meanwhile, has prioritized biogas for heavy transport, while Finland is pursuing a balanced mix of electric drive, HVO, and biogas. By tailoring solutions to each market, PostNord ensures progress across the region.

“There is no one-size-fits-all solution. Each country needs its own mix of technologies, and together they add up to a strong Nordic transition,” says Nima.

Preparing the road to 2030

The coming years will be critical for reaching fossil-free operations by 2030. Sharing knowledge across the organization will be crucial, as well as ensuring that it reaches all transport suppliers. Strengthening collaboration with transport partners will be essential to accelerate their transition and make fossil-free transport the standard across all markets.

“Our suppliers play a vital role in the transition. By sharing knowledge and supporting their shift to fossil-free operations, we can move the entire value chain forward,” says Per Wollin.

Learning, adapting, progressing

Practical experience, such as training drivers to handle electric trucks, and sharing best practices will continue to be important. They help overcome barriers like concerns over range, and as experience grows, so does confidence in the transition. The roadmap will continue to be updated annually to reflect shifting conditions. Policy changes can influence investment decisions, while technological advancements and customer requirements also play a key role. Ultimately, it is PostNord’s commitment to becoming fossil-free by 2030 that leads the transition.

Looking beyond 2030

While the immediate focus is on reaching fossil-free operations by 2030, the roadmap also looks further ahead.

After 2030, attention will turn to upstream emissions from manufacturing vehicles, construction of buildings, and the wider value chain, as part of PostNord’s commitment to reach net zero emissions by 2040. This ensures that PostNord not only delivers on its own climate targets but also helps transform the logistics industry at large.

“The next five years will be about scaling up proven solutions. What we’ve achieved so far gives us confidence that reaching 2030 is within our grasp,” says Per.
